ACT® Overview
LENGTH
2 Hours 55 Minutes
The overall test is just under 3 hours. If you choose to do the optional writing essay portion you will add 40 additional minutes. The time and number of questions for each section is listed below. Timing can be a challenge on the ACT and is what most students struggle with at first. At SEC, we work with the students to eliminate timing as an issue with strategy and practice.
SECTIONS
English | Math | Reading | Science (Essay is optional)
The English section is 75 questions in 45 minutes.
The Math section is 60 questions in 60 minutes.
The Reading section is 40 questions in 35 minutes.
The Science section is 40 questions in 35 minutes.
The sections are taken in the order listed above. The student can not go back and finish questions from another section after the time is complete.
SCORE
36
The highest possible composite score on the ACT is a 36. Each of the four sections are graded on a 36 point scale as well. To figure the overall composite score, you simply add the 4 section scores and divide by 4. If that total equals a half point the overall score is rounded up (Example: if the average of the four sections is 27.5 the composite score will be a 28).
NATIONAL AVERAGE SCORE
21
Nationally, the average composite score on the ACT is around 21. Typically, an in-state university would require a minimum of a 21 to be eligible for admissions, however, that can vary from school to school. At SEC, we use 21 as a baseline score for a minimum college readiness score and encourage students to score above this number as much as possible. The higher the score, the more opportunity for the student.

Not sure between ACT® and SAT®?
Students often struggle with deciding between taking the SAT or the ACT. There are several differences between the ACT and SAT so choosing the test that best suites the student is important.
THE GOOD NEWS: Almost all Universities accept either the ACT or the SAT equally. So that allows the student to pick the one that better fits their skill set and then put all of their focus and energy on that test.
HOW TO DECIDE: We recommend starting with a practice test of each to compare scores and to have the student get a feel of the timing and structure of each test. We will provide a detailed score report for each and meet with you and your student to compare them and discuss each test. Based on the scores and the student’s opinion (and they will have one!) you can form a clear decision on which test to take and create the path for your student to succeed! This decision significantly helps with the student’s confidence and focus and eliminates the anxiety of which test to take. We are here to help!
We recommend starting with the ACT and then scheduling the SAT soon after. If your student has recently taken the PSAT in school we can also use that as the SAT comparison to avoid having to take both practice tests.
