Download an in-depth overview of the new adaptive digital SAT:

LENGTH

2 hours 14 minutes

The overall test is two hours and fifteen minutes and a total of 98 questions. The time and number of questions for each section is listed below. While the timing per question has increased from the old SAT, each question will carry more weight. At SEC, we work with the students to properly pace each section so ensure accuracy and optimal performance.

SECTIONS

Reading & Writing | Math

The Reading & Writing section has two modules. Each module is 27 questions with 32 minutes to complete each module. Combined it is 54 questions in 64 minutes. That allows 71 seconds per question

The Math section also has two modules. Each module is 22 questions in 35 minutes. Combined it is 44 questions in 70 minutes. That allows 95 seconds per question.

SCORE

1600

The overall score of the new digital SAT is still based on 1600 points. The Reading and Writing section has two modules and a combined maximum score of 800 points. The math section also has two modules and a combined maximum score of 800 points. The overall score is figured simply by adding the Reading & Writing section with the Math section.

ADAPTIVE MODULES

Module 2 - Easy or Hard?

The adaptive aspect of the new digital SAT will be in Module 2 of both the Reading & Writing and Math sections. Module 2 will adapt to an “easier” or “harder” module based on the students performance in Module 1 of the respective sections. The student needs to get approximately 70% correct on Module 1 of the Reading & Writing section and 60% correct on Module 1 of the Math section in order to get the harder Module 2. If the student get’s the easier module they can not score higher than a 590 on the entire section.

Not sure between the ACT® and SAT®?

Students often struggle with deciding between taking the SAT or the ACT. There are several differences between the ACT and SAT so choosing the test that best suites the student is important.

THE GOOD NEWS: Almost all Universities accept either the ACT or the SAT equally. So that allows the student to pick the one that better fits their skill set and then put all of their focus and energy on that test.

HOW TO DECIDE: We recommend starting with a practice test of each to compare scores and to have the student get a feel of the timing and structure of each test. We will provide a detailed score report for each and meet with you and your student to compare them and discuss each test. Based on the scores and the student’s opinion (and they will have one!) you can form a clear decision on which test to take and create the path for your student to succeed! This decision significantly helps with the student’s confidence and focus and eliminates the anxiety of which test to take. We are here to help!

We recommend starting with the ACT and then scheduling the SAT soon after. If your student has recently taken the PSAT in school we can also use that as the SAT comparison to avoid having to take both practice tests.

What People Are Saying About Their SAT Prep…

Scottsdale Education Center has been a wonderful experience for us!! They taught both of our high school children great study skills and gave them the support they needed to succeed at school, as well as improve their self-esteem. Allison and Bob did an amazing job with SAT prep sessions. My daughter’s SAT score went up 200 points!! They take a lot of time getting to know each child and truly care about their success. Our entire experience at SEC has been terrific and we would recommend SEC to other families…we already have.

— Teri

The Scottsdale Education Center helped me an incredible amount with my SAT score, and helped me increase my score over 600 points from my first score. The helpful staff were very enthusiastic and made learning the material fun and understandable.
